"I'm coming across more clearly, speaking more eloquently, with more defined arguments. "My public speaking skills have improved," he said. He has also attended National Student Diversity Leadership Conferences, including an 11-day event on the American University campus in Washington, D.C., during summer 2011. "It substantially increased my debating and communications skills," he observed, and it heightened his understanding of national and international politics and events. At both conferences, students from across the country debated mock legislative bills they'd prepared.

His surname translates as "worshiper of the generous one." Gawad is one of the more common Arabic adjectives used to describe God. Shereef's first name means "noble." The teen explained his parents thought it was a nice and easy name to have in America. Shereef's younger sister, Nora, 16, is a junior at The Key School. Amal earned a medical degree, too, but is currently a stay-at-home mom. Abdel-Gawad has a private pediatric practice in Cambridge. In 1996, the couple moved to Maryland with their two young children. Ahmed Abdel-Gawad emigrated to upstate New York from Cairo with his wife, Amal Shehata. I 1993, a few years after graduating from Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine in Egypt, his father Dr. Shereef is an Egyptian-American, born in Buffalo, N.Y. To keep up with the news in the world around him he reads The Capital, The Washington Post and The New York Times, plus listens to the BBC and NPR.

"It would be the current experience we provide, with the online pdf file of the issues, individual articles with commenting, and 'web-exclusive' stuff like podcasts and video blogs," Shereef explained. "Our articles cover just about everything, from the current elections to a mocking April Fool's Day issue, to movie reviews. We call those 'Sparkles.'" Shereef was a staff member his freshman year and senior editor the next two years.

Published monthly during the school year, Shereef noted, "Half of the Sparks are full editions with 10 to 12 pages, while the other five are one page, printed front and back mini- Sparks. His co-editor is fellow senior Fish Stark. The 17-year-old Key School senior is co-editor-in-chief of the school's newspaper, Spark. Shereef Abdel-Gawad knows the dilemma many editors face as a publication deadline looms: If the writers don't turn in their stories on time, he's faced with creatively rearranging a lot of empty space.
